Air Cooled Condensers for Offshore Applications by Sedina HVAC

Project Overview: Offshore Air Cooled Condensers for Ørsted

Sedina HVAC delivers air cooled condensers for offshore platforms, supporting the green energy transition with advanced marine HVAC solutions.

We are proud to present one of our recent projects delivered for the offshore sector – a series of high-performance air cooled condensers (ACC) designed to work with R410A refrigerant. The units were manufactured by Sedina HVAC for TEKNOTHERM MARINE HVAC and delivered to Ørsted A/S, a global leader in green energy. The condensers are part of advanced marine HVAC system and were installed on the open decks of two offshore transformer platforms servicing wind farms in the German North Sea sector. Learn how this tailored HVAC solution ensures long-term performance for Ørsted in demanding offshore and marine environments. We kindly invite you to contact us.

They form part of split-type air conditioner systems that maintain optimal operating temperatures for technical rooms onboard the platforms.

Technical Design and Material Selection

Offshore applications involve strict technical and environmental demands. Our air cooled condensers for offshore platforms are built to meet strict technical and environmental requirements through durable construction and corrosion-resistant materials. The condensers were engineered in cooperation with the Ørsted team. Using a custom material composition designed to withstand the challenges of offshore conditions, the condensers feature:

Housing made from brushed stainless steel (1.4404 / AISI 316L) for excellent corrosion resistance.

Fan impellers and blades crafted from Al-Si11Cu2(Fe) aluminium alloy. The wire mesh outlet grilles protect the fan blades from mechanical damage and prevent foreign objects from entering the unit, ensuring safe operation in demanding offshore conditions.

Heat exchangers built with a welded stainless steel AISI316 frame, copper fins, and copernickel CuNi 90/10 tubes.

Advanced Protective Coating: ElectroFin® E-coat

To ensure maximum durability of our air cooled condensers in harsh offshore environments, we applied a full-surface ElectroFin® E-coat using PPG POWERCRON® cathodic epoxy technology.

This advanced cathodic electrocoating method creates a uniform epoxy layer on heat exchanger coils, providing outstanding resistance to salt, humidity, and industrial pollutants. Unlike manual spray or dip coatings, ElectroFin® guarantees complete and consistent coverage, including deep between fins, without bridging or gaps. This ensures long-term protection against corrosion, especially in marine conditions where traditional coatings often fail.
The coating process takes approximately five days and is backed by a 5-year warranty on both materials and workmanship—something rarely offered by other coating providers.

ElectroFin® E-coat is internationally recognized in the HVAC industry for extending the service life of coils and reducing maintenance costs. It is the preferred solution for demanding environments such as offshore platforms, coastal installations, refineries, and power plants.
Thanks to the use of PPG POWERCRON® technology, the coating achieves superior edge protection and consistent thickness, making it one of the most reliable anti-corrosion solutions available for fin-and-tube and microchannel heat exchangers.

Electrical Protection and Safety Features

Additional protection includes IP56-class electric motors with C5M-rated paint coating. A comprehensive grounding system with INOX earth bolts and stainless steel tubular cable lugs ensures safe and reliable operation in offshore environments.

The units also feature stainless steel 1.4404 (316L) mirror-polished switch enclosures with IP66 protection. Padlockable with three locks and a door interlock with defeat mechanism, they ensure secure access control and safe operation in demanding offshore environments. The enclosures are tested in accordance with IEC 60947-3.

EMC-rated stainless steel cable glands and marine-grade shielded cables designed to minimize electromagnetic interference and resist corrosion – all compliant with strict offshore equipment standards.

Retrofit for Ørsted: Replacing End-of-Life Units

These new Sedina HVAC air cooled condensers were installed as a retrofit, replacing older units. The use of corrosion-resistant and compatible materials prevents electrolytic reactions and galvanic corrosion, allowing continuous operation in harsh marine environments.

Our new units ensure long-term durability and performance, enabling Ørsted to benefit from efficient, uninterrupted operation for many years to come.
