Delivery of Technical and Domestic Water Heaters for Naval Ship Application

In June, we delivered two high-performance marine water heaters for integration into a technical and domestic water treatment installation on board a naval vessel. The system includes a 150 kW tubular electric heating element, compatible with two power supply systems: U=3x440V; 60 Hz and U=3x400V; 50 Hz. With five power stages ranging from 20 kW to 150 kW, the heater ensures efficient and flexible thermal performance tailored to varying heat demands in onboard living areas.

The electric heating element is installed inside a flow-through stainless steel pressure vessel, designed to heat both fresh water and glycol-water mixtures (up to 50/50%). The complete heater assembly, including all components, is mounted on a rigid steel frame. The power control cabinet, engineered by Sedina HVAC, is fully prewired and integrated with heating and sensor elements using EMC-compliant stainless steel cable glands. All components are painted in a uniform marine-grade color.

The heater was designed in compliance with the marine EMC standard IEC 60533. The pressure vessel features a 90-liter capacity, constructed from AISI 316L stainless steel, rated for 10 bar operating pressure, and equipped with PN16 flanged connections in accordance with EN 1092-1. The construction conforms to PED 2014/68/EU Article 4(3) and UDT standards (WUDT/UC/2003). Thermal insulation is provided by 50 mm Paroc mineral wool and a powder-coated stainless steel jacket.

The water heater is equipped with both analog and electronic instrumentation for monitoring and protection, including bimetal thermometers, pressure gauges with shut-off cocks, proportional safety valves, automatic air vents, a safety thermostat, pressure transmitters with isolating valves, temperature control thermostats, and inlet/outlet temperature transmitters. All instrumentation is rated to IP44.

The electric control cabinet features a user-friendly control panel, enabling both manual and automatic operation of the heater. The PLC-based automation system regulates outlet water temperature and allows manual selection of one of five heating power levels. The system provides:

  • automatic start/stop and continuous operation,
  • local manual start/stop,
  • manual and automatic power stage control,
  • emergency shutdown,
  • manual and automatic outlet temperature control.

The tubular electric heating element is designed to maintain the desired domestic hot water temperature. It includes a built-in safety thermostat to prevent overheating, housed in an IP44-rated junction box. The box is fitted with EMC cable glands and the entire assembly is manufactured from AISI 316L stainless steel.

The distribution cabinet is made from powder-coated stainless steel with IP55 ingress protection. It includes:

  • main power switch with manual voltage selection,
  • heater on/off switch,
  • manual power level selector,
  • signal test button,
  • indicator lights: white (power connected), green (operating), red (fault condition).

The system has undergone successful pressure and functional testing at the factory, including verification of all safety and control automation features. The next stage will be commissioning in actual marine operating conditions.
